HISTORY AND HERITAGE

The Gridiron is a unique piece of history from the days of the Royal Arsenal. Built in the late 19th Century, the wooden platform would support purpose-built barges at low tide. Giant naval guns would be brought by rail and loaded onto barges (affectionately named Gog and Magog from the Bible), before being taken down to the firing range at Yantlett Creek on the Isle of Grain.
